I have just finished reading Tough Times Never Last, But Tough People Do!, a captivating inspirational book written by Robert H. Schuller.

They say that for successful learning to take place, both the teacher and the student should be involved in the process. It should not be a case where the role of the teacher is to feed the student while that of the student is to receive that which the teacher has prepared. In this case, the author has invited the readers to help him complete the book. Only then will the readers have successfully completed a course in Possibility Thinking.

The last chapter is titled Alphabet For Action. Here, Robert H. Schuller requires that the readers come up with their own Possibility Thinking verbs for each letter of the alphabet. For instance in the book, the letter A stands for Affirm, B for Believe and C for Commit. What really caught my eye and is the subject for this blogpost today is the letter D which stands for Dare. We got to dare to try, dare to love, dare to make a commitment, dare to take a risk because if you don’t dare to take a risk, you’ll never get ahead. You’ll never solve your problems.

Under the letter D for Dare, there was a short excerpt that really encourages us to Dare to Do. It goes as below:

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach for another is to risk involvement.
To expose your feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas, your dreams, before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
To live is to risk dying.
To believe is to risk despair.
To try is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The people who risk nothing, do nothing, have nothing, are nothing.
They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live.
Chained by their attitudes they are slaves; they have forfeited their freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.

We all want to be free, so we should risk more to increase our chances of being free.
